Intergranular Corrosion of Stainless Steel Tubes By yaang.com

When austenitic stainless steel tubes are heated or cooled through the temperature range 425-900C (800-1650F), chromium tends to combine with carbon to form chromium carbides. The carbides precipitate preferen- tially at grain boundaries depleting chromium from the adjacent areas. This reduces the corrosion resistance of the chromium depleted areas, sensitizing the alloy to Intergranular Attack (IGA).

317L Stainless Steel is a molybdenum bearing austenitic chromium nickel steel similar to type 316 Stainless Steel, except the alloy content in 317L Stainless Steel is somewhat higher. It has a supperior corrosion resistance in special applications where it is desired to reduce contamination to a minimum. 317L Stainless Steel was developed primarily to resist more effectively the attack of sulfurous acid compounds. Howerver, its proven ability to combat corrosion has widened its use considerably and is now being used for many other industrial applications. The low carbon content of 317L Stainless Steel provides immunity to intergranular corrosion in applications where heavy cross sections cannot be annealed after welding or where low temperature stress relieving treatments are desired.

What is 317L Stainless Steel UNS S31703?

Stainless Steel 317L is a molybdenum bearing, low carbon content "L" grade austenitic stainless steel that provides improved corrosion resistance over 304L and 316L stainless steels. The low carbon provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes.
Stainless Steel 317L is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic as a result of welding.

Type 317L Stainless Steel (UNS 31703) is a low carbon austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that can be used in applications where it is not possible to anneal after welding and where maximum corrosion resistance is required. It provides good oxidation resistance in intermittent service to 1600°F and in continuous service to 1700°F.
